England’s World Cup Squad

February 14, 2007 · Filed Under Cricket World Cup

So England have named their squad for the world cup as you can see here. No real surprises, apart maybe from Mal Loye being dropped.

But of course, we all think we know better so here are the two squads which myself a friend would choose. We chose these before we won the Commenwealth Bank Series, but they probably still sit like this. The first 11 are listed, and then the replacements below.

My squad:

  • Ed Joyce
  • Michael Vaughan (C)
  • Ian Bell
  • KP
  • Paul Collingwood
  • Andrew Flintoff
  • Matt Prior (wkt)
  • Jamie Dalrymple
  • Jon Lewis
  • Monty Panesar
  • Jimmy Anderson

replacements

  • Andrew Strauss
  • Stuart Broad
  • Liam Plunkett
  • Owais Shah

And my Friends Squad:

  • Michael Vaughan (C)
  • Ed Joyce
  • KP
  • Andrew Strauss
  • Andrew Flintoff
  • Paul Collingwood
  • Steven Davies (wkt)
  • Jamie Dalrymple
  • Jon Lewis
  • Monty Panesar
  • Jimmy Anderson

replacements

  • Liam Plunkett
  • Saj Mahmood
  • Ian Bell
  • Mal Loye

So what do we read into those two teams?

Well they are generally quite similar to each other, and the real squad announced, so maybe we are heading in the right direction with our one-day squad. We disagree on the wicket keeper, and maybe this is one spot in particular that will be up for grabs come the summer test matches.

Otherwise I’ve dropped Strauss from my first XI, but he could come in if Vaughan or Joyce don’t produce the goods. The only other difference is that in my replacements, I’ve gone for Broad and Shah, two players i think could make a difference.

So the speculation is over - but who has it right - me, my friend or the ECB?! Let me know your squad by posting a comment or laughing at mine!

Your friends team is awful. He obviously does not have a clue about cricket!!

My squad is capable of winning the trophy blindfolded, if you can do better name your squad!!!!!

Winning the trophy blindfolded? Does that represent how you look when your playing cricket, blindfolded?

    John

You disappoint me with your words, time to grow up i believe, you can tell it’s half term. Either name your squad or pipe down.

Sorry to say but neither of you have the team rite. Where is Paul ‘Mouthy’ Nixon. He does a great job winding up batsmen and his glovework is out of this world. Also Michael Vaughan may be a good leader but what is the point of carrying one player. And finally why doesn’t Matthew Hoggard play ODI cricket. So here is my team

    1. Mal Loye
    2. Ed Joyce
    3. Ian Bell/Stuart Law??
    4. KP
    5. Paul Collingwood
    6. Freddie
    7. Paul Nixon
    8. Michael Yardy/Jamie Darymple
    9. Matthew Hoggard
    10.Jimmy Anderson
    11.Monty

    Ian isn’t Stuart Law australian?

I don’t know anyone with views on this blog but are you cricket fans or not???? Because if you were you would realise that Stuart Law qualified to play for England over two years ago. Don’t argue or point out what you think are errors from the cricketing guru!!!!!!!!!!! You have been warned Andy.

Unfortunately half term is over now but we will see how far England get in the World cup. Paul Nixon is a good choice of keeper Ian, very bouncy personality which keeps the boys going. I fancy India for the World cup.
