Pink Grips - What’s that all about?!

February 7, 2007 · Filed Under Cricket Talk

First there was Hayden and Symonds in the test series with bright pink grips on their bats. Now normally, seeing as pink grips look rubbish, i’d say something. But considering the size of Haydos and Roy, i kept quiet!

But yesterday I see Strauss and Collingwood with them as well, and they look even more ridiculous! (I think maybe Freddie had one as well but he wasn’t there long enough for me to confirm this sighting).

Look guys, pink grips on cricket bats DO NOT WORK! The colours are all wrong with the bat, not to mention the stick you’d get!

But then… I read that it is some kind of breast cancer awareness thing and all those thoughts have to go out of the window and applaud those that have them. Its not been recognised over here in the UK yet, maybe its an Australian thing - just watch out for people wrongly claiming giving money to charity if you want to buy one of these. You could just donate a few quid directly otherwise, and not have to own a pink grip! So, well done all those internationals who use pink grips…

They still look stupid though.

I have had a look on Cancer research website and can’t see them. There are pink grips available on other sites but they are not linked to Cancer Research. I am a regular visitor to our local Hospital in Sheffield so if I see or hear anything I will post a msg ASAP

Like I said in the posting, it seems more of an Australian thing. They had Symonds in the commentary box in the last game where he explained he was trying to raise awareness by using the pink grip, so although it may not be official, its been done to raise awareness.

    Re: PINK GRIPS
Matthew Hayden, along with Andrew Symonds, is using the pink handle to promote breast cancer awareness. For every run the Queensland opener scored, his bat sponsor, Gray Nicholls, donated $20 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Both English and New Zealand players have supported this cause while playing in Australia.
The australian cricketers both past and present support many charities such as the McGrath Foundation http://www.mcgrathfoundation.com.au/ the Shane Warne Foundation
http://www.tswf.com.au/ and The Royal Flying Doctor Service to name a few.

There is a website here in England called Breast Cancer Care which sells them, and the money goes to Breast Cancer Research.
    The website is: http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/content.php?page_id=8797
